Cutting and Depanelizing PCBs

Here at HubCityLabs, we have a great, dustless way to cut and depanelize PCBs. We use a Grizzly Mini Shear. The Grizzly Mini Shear produces are clean, professional edge for almost any DIY sized projects.

We frequently order panelized PCBs from SeeedStudio, and depanelizing them with this tool is a breeze. At 150$, it’s decently priced for most DIYers or Hackerspaces.

As a bonus, this shear will let you cut sheet metal, and bend them to make metal enclosures.

I use a guillotine stye paper cutter for PCBs. Nice break/shear though. Wish there was a 12″ version. That would be a perfect small shop size combo.

I’ve cut a long slot in a plank of wood. The slot is a little over the width of a circuit board. I insert the circuit board into the slot, but only far enough to reach the circuit board perforations. I bend the circuit board and it snaps at the perforations. It’s not clean, though, but helps prevent the circuit board from splitting in a wrong way.

PCB can be cutted with a sharped metal like a knife, mark both sides as glass (a little deep) try to bend and pcb is broken like a glass or ceramic tile.

Sawing PCBs is a terrible idea unless you have very good dust extraction. Breathing epoxy-glass dust isn’t healthy.

Bending them to break at perforations works IF there are no SMT or fine pitch components nearby — bending the board can damage solder bonds.
